At 00:43:20 UTC the Mastcam Right captured this incredible picture of Martian pebbles.
Now I wonder how such an image can go unnoticed!!!
So many perforated pebbles, with all the holes oriented differently, certainly are not the result of the splinters of a meteorite because otherwise the holes should have been oriented all in the same direction and we should have observed the same holes in the ground and in the surrounding rocks that instead are totally devoid.
The only explanation that comes to mind is that they could have been originated by something similar to the dates of the sea, mollusks that live attached to the rocks corroding them at the point of support.
I hope that someone “authoritative” can also provide other hypotheses, even if at the moment no one “dares” to pronounce, although I myself have tried to ask for explanations to “experts”.
This is not the first photo that shows a similar phenomenon and I trust that it is not even the last, so try yourself to show this photo to your “trusted expert” and let me know.
The original image is a black and white encoding of the Bayer mask that has been converted to color through a process called “debayering” or “demosaicing”. In addition, the photo has undergone noise reduction due to Jpeg compression, white balance and a slight increase in microcontrast and color saturation.
